Mopar Trailer Hitch Wiring Harness

I had my hitch and the wire harness professionally installed at Eclipse Tint. Jason the owner is very experienced and does all my tinting and suspension work for the last 15 years. He even said this wiring harness wasn’t the easiest but I think that was because my Wrangler is an EcoDiesel and he said the routing of the wires is way different than in a gas Jeep.

Fairly easy kit to install

Although the instructions can be a bit difficult to follow, the install of the kit is fairly straight forward. You will do yourself a huge favor if you watch some of the videos out there prior to starting your install as there are some helpful hints which make the installation a bit simpler. Apparently, the kit has changed in the last year because there is no need to take the interior apart to install this. The only parts you have to pin are the plug for the trailer connector and the left hand tail light T. The holes in the interior of the body are not large enough to pull the other plugs through so, just follow the frame rail as shown in the instructions, you will find another harness tied off on it which you can tie it off to.
The only issue I had was there is no room to pull the power, ground, and brake signal wire up along the wheel well as shown in the instructions, I ended up following the battery lead.
As a side note, I also did not pull the wheel well liners completely out as shown, they will pull out of the way enough to work the harness in if you take your time. All in all, I put this in my 2019 JL Rubicon Unlimited in about 3.5 hours.
ProsThe kit comes with all the fasteners you might need and the wire lengths are perfect if you follow the instructions.
ConsThere are some places that are tough to get the harness tied off.

You Can Do It !!

It appears overwhelming, but if I can do it, believe me you can do it too ! First thing you want to do is throw away the cartoon instructions and find a good uTube video that shows installation and keep your computer/phone in your work area. The hardest part is getting the wire through the rubber deal in the firewall. I have a 2019, Unlimited, Moab, DO NOT hook up hot wire until EVERYTHING is hooked up. I disconnected both terminals on battery and the place you put the hot wire in the fuse box under the hood was still HOT! There must be some kind of backup battery or power supply somewhere, if there is, I never found it. On the videos, it looks very confusing on the driver's side tail light when you have to take apart two connections and put a couple of wires in the connections, but once you get them apart it all kind of clicks of what the video is showing you and it's really pretty simple. If you have the big bass speaker in the rear, you don't have to take any screws out of it, it will pull out enough (along with the carpet) to get your wires through. When you get your hot wire to the passenger side tail light, there is a connector that goes on the wire and then plugs into a connection that was not shown on the video I watched. It took me about 5 hours and a six pack of beer to complete installation! Good Luck !
ProsSaved me some money and gave me a big sense of pride that I took an overwhelming amount of parts, put them in my new Jeep, and it worked !! (I'm gonna break my arm patting myself on the back!)
ConsIn my opinion, horrible cartoon instructions. Maybe o/k for some folks, but I just didn't get it.

I installed this with the trailer hitch receiver. I took the extra steps and removed the entire interior trim, including rear and passenger seat, while running the wiring harness for this. None of that was actually needed (some of the trim needs to be removed, however not all) but I did it due to installation of other accessories at the same time that needed access to similar wireways in the Jeep. First thing, the harness power cable that comes off the battery requires that you route it through a rubber grommet behind the front passanger wheel well, that is only accessible if you have smaller hands or a lot of patience and don't mind some bruised up knuckles. After fishing a coat hanger with the cable taped to it through the grommet, the hard part was actually over and the rest of the installation took next to no time at all. The instructions were fairly clear and everything tested out just fine. Now I just need to wait for an electronic brake controller for larger tow packages.
ProsInstructions are clear enough. Direct plug and play for most of the connections.
ConsNeed small hands to access the wire run for the power cable.

Didn't even attempt to put this on. Had a local hitch company do the install. They said it is much more complicated than the JK.
